Causes and Consequences of the US-Mexican War

Date: 1846-1848

  • Expansionist Polk (Manifest Destiny!) wanted to buy California, but relations with Mexico hadn't been amazing since they had annexed Texas. Polk sent John Slidell to Mexico City in 1845 to offer $25 million maximum for California. Mexicans flat-out refused.
  • Polk sent troops under Zachary Taylor to taunt the Mexicans by the Rio Grande. Nothing happened.
  • Polk asked Congress to declare war on Mexico for 1) unpaid claims, 2) Slidell rejection. Congress wanted Mexicans to fire first - and they did. April 25, 1846, attacked Taylor's army.
  • Congress voted on war!
  • Polk: "Mexicans shed American blood on American soil." Whigs: you sure its ours? You sure you weren't just provoking them?
  • Mexican dictator Santa Anna was banished to Cuba - he tricked Americans to sneak him back to Mexico, but then helped Mexico against the US.
  • General Stephen Kearny with the help of John Fremont overthrew Mexico, but then helped Mexican rule in California 1846
  • General Zachary Taylor's victory at Buena Vista made him a military hero (and future president).
  • General Winfield Scott battled at Mexico City in 1847 and completely owned!
  • Nicholas Trist signed Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, ending the war. The treaty confirmed US title to Texas, and a huge area that went all the way to Cali. It was ½ of Mexico! It would cost the US $15 million plus cancellation of all Mexican debts. Treaty was approved in Senate.
  • The Mexican War results: relatively small war, but increased the size of America by 1/3. It also prepared generals and the army and navy for the Civil War. Worsened relations with Mexico and Latin America (but who cares about them anyway?). Yanks (against Mexican War) thought South only wanted California to have another slave state, this provoked the slavery conflict.
  • Wilmot amendment – no slavery in newly acquired Mexican territory. Not passed in Congress, but enforced in all but 1 free states. Mexican War led to Civil War!

To all those who are whining about racism. The war had nothing to do with racism. It had more to do with the arrogance of the Mexican government and General Antonio Lopez Santa Anna who called himself "The Napoleon of the West". As a matter of fact, long before the Mexican War, Santa Anna had his own sights set on occupying Washington D.C. Before the war, the United states showed no aggression towards Mexico. They had their own issues with Great Britan and France; and America's right to be treated as a legitmate trading partner with the rest of the world. The U.S. sent delegates to Mexico to purchase territory that was not being used or governed by the Mexican government. The same way they purchased territory from Napoleon (Louisiana Purchase). The delegates' offer was refused. The reason for the war was not that Mexico culture rejected colonialism or racism. They looked down on people of Anglo-German descent and they used the term "gringos" (by the way, that term is still being used today) every bit as much as we looked down on them and had our own slurs for them. One need only to look at the Texas Revolution and the complete disappearance of the Incas and the Aztecs at the hands of Conquistadors (translated as "conquerors" from Spanish) as evidence. The only reason that the Commanches and Apaches were around to fight the Americans is that those tribes defeated attempts by the Mexican forces to liquidate them as they did with the Aztecs and Incas. No one in their right mind cares about verbally insulting their physical enemies. People who throw the "racist" label at anything they don't understand need to grow up. Five year olds do that, only they use different terms. Lastly, any opposition to Mexico is not racism if you, yourself, are caucasion. Latinos are caucasions as well (along with Arabs). They trace their ancestors back to Spain. Incase you didn't know, Spain is a country located in Western Europe. I suggest that, those of you who commmented the word "racist" or "Trump", should go find your "safe place" and study history, rather than watching "Youtube".
